What a cheap driveway costs you

A driveway poured 4 inches thick with no reinforcement, on an uncompacted base, in a mix with no air entrainment, will usually survive its first summer and fail in its second or third winter. The failure is not a hairline crack you can live with — it is spalling, where the surface flakes off in sheets as trapped water freezes and expands inside the concrete, and settlement cracking, where the slab breaks over a soft spot in the base. Neither can be patched back to structural. You pay for demolition and disposal of the old slab on top of the price of the new one, which is why the cheap pour is usually the expensive one.

Why a Truckee driveway is not a valley driveway

Two things drive the spec up here. The first is freeze-thaw: water gets into the pores of the concrete, freezes, expands about nine percent, and pushes the surface apart from the inside — and the Sierra runs that cycle repeatedly through a single winter, not once a season. Air-entrained concrete answers it by casting microscopic air bubbles into the mix that give the ice somewhere to go. The second is the plow. A blade hitting a proud edge or a lipped joint will tear a driveway apart faster than any winter will, so edges get tooled down and joints get placed where the blade runs, not where it is convenient to cut.
