The cost of getting it wrong

The flat patio problem

A patio poured flat, or sloped the wrong way, does two things you will not forgive. It holds meltwater against your foundation and siding, which is the expensive failure. And it turns into a sheet of ice at the back door every night the temperature drops, which is the dangerous one. Both are decided in the hour the forms are set and neither can be fixed afterwards without breaking the slab out — you cannot re-slope cured concrete. A smooth trowel finish makes it worse by being the slickest surface available exactly where people step out in winter.

Snowmelt, not rain

A patio in a mild climate deals with rain, which arrives and leaves. A patio here deals with a snowpack that sits on it, melts from underneath during the day, runs to the lowest point, and freezes there at night — the same water working the same spot for months. So the drainage path matters more than it would anywhere else, joints matter more because the slab is moving through a bigger temperature range, and the finish is chosen for traction on ice first and looks second. A broom finish across the traffic direction is not a downgrade from smooth up here; it is the correct answer.

How much slope does a patio need?

Enough to move water off it and away from the house, every time, without ponding. We set the fall on site against your grade and your downspouts — that is the part of the job that decides how the patio ages.

Do you do stamped patterns?

Yes — slate, cobble, wood plank, and ashlar patterns are all available.

Will my patio crack?

Concrete shrinks as it cures, so the honest answer is that it will crack somewhere. Control joints decide where: they give the slab a planned weak line so it cracks straight down a joint you meant to be there, instead of across the middle.
